Today, the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board proudly celebrated the grand opening of the BJ Roberts Behavioral Health Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. This new, cutting-edge facility honors the late Hampton Sheriff BJ Roberts, whose dedication to mental health left a lasting impact on the community. Roberts, who passed away in 2020, devoted nearly three decades to serving as Hampton’s sheriff. His commitment to mental health continued even after his passing, as he left a financial gift to H-NNCSB in his will to further support our mission.

Spanning over 20,000 square feet, the center is designed to serve individuals experiencing acute mental health crises. It will offer a range of urgent care services, including therapy, medication management, suicide prevention, and crisis intervention. Unlike traditional emergency rooms, the facility emphasizes a peaceful and therapeutic atmosphere.

Located at 300 Marcella Road, the center will help relieve pressure on local emergency departments by providing a more appropriate setting for mental health emergencies.

Funding for the project came from a variety of sources, including contributions from the cities of Hampton and Newport News, Sentara Healthcare, the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, and support from Governor Glenn Youngkin’s “Right Help, Right Now” initiative.

Self-Care Tips for the Winter Season

As we move past the shortest day of the year, the promise of longer days and more light is on the horizon. However, the rest of winter still brings its challenges, from cold weather to the lingering effects of shorter daylight hours. At H-NNCSB, we understand how important it is to prioritize your mental and physical well-being during this time. That’s why we’ve put together some practical self-care tips to help you thrive for the remainder of the season.

           1. Embrace the Light

Winter days are shorter, and the lack of sunlight can affect your mood. Combat the winter blues by:

Spending time outside during daylight hours—even a 10-minute walk can make a difference.

Opening your curtains and blinds to let natural light in.

Considering a light therapy box if you struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

           2. Stay Active

Physical activity can boost your mood and energy levels, even when it’s cold out. Try:

Indoor exercises, such as yoga, stretching, or online workout classes.

Winter activities like ice skating or hiking to enjoy the beauty of the season.

Setting small, achievable goals to keep moving every day.

           3. Nourish Your Body

Healthy eating can be more challenging in the winter, but it’s vital for your physical and mental health. Focus on:

Eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Staying hydrated—your body still needs water even in colder weather.

Enjoying warm, nourishing meals like soups and stews.

           4. Prioritize Rest

Winter often makes us feel like hibernating, and that’s okay! To ensure quality rest:

Stick to a consistent sleep schedule.

Create a bedtime routine that helps you relax, such as reading or meditating.

Limit screen time before bed to improve your sleep quality.

           5. Stay Connected

Social connections are crucial for mental health, especially in the winter. Combat isolation by:

Scheduling regular check-ins with friends or family.

Participating in community events or joining a hobby group.

Reaching out to support groups or mental health resources if you feel overwhelmed.

           6. Practice Mindfulness

The hustle and bustle of the holidays, combined with winter’s challenges, can make it easy to feel stressed. Mindfulness practices can help you stay grounded:

Try deep breathing exercises or meditation.

Keep a gratitude journal to focus on the positives in your life.

Spend time doing activities that bring you joy, such as reading, crafting, or listening to music.

           7. Seek Professional Help When Needed

September is recognized as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a dedicated time to raise awareness about the reality of suicide, the impact it has on individuals, families, and communities, and the critical steps that can be taken to prevent it. This month serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health, the need for compassion, and the power of community support in saving lives. Suicide is a complex and multifaceted issue, but by understanding the causes, recognizing the warning signs, and knowing where to find help, we can work together to reduce the number of lives lost to suicide.

Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, claiming over 45,000 lives each year. It affects people of all ages, races, and socioeconomic backgrounds, leaving lasting impacts on families, friends, and communities. The stigma surrounding mental health often prevents individuals from seeking the help they need, exacerbating feelings of isolation and hopelessness. By increasing public awareness and promoting open conversations about mental health, we can begin to break down these barriers and create a more supportive environment for those who are struggling.

One of the most important aspects of suicide prevention is recognizing the warning signs that someone may be at risk. These signs can vary, but common indicators include:

Expressing feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness: When someone feels like they have no reason to live or that life is not worth living, they may verbalize these thoughts or show signs of severe depression.

Withdrawing from friends, family, and activities: A person who is contemplating suicide may begin to isolate themselves, withdrawing from social interactions and activities they once enjoyed.

Sudden changes in behavior or mood: This can include extreme mood swings, increased irritability, or a noticeable shift in behavior, such as suddenly becoming more calm or resigned after a period of intense sadness.

Talking about wanting to die or harm oneself: Direct or indirect statements about wanting to die or hurt oneself should always be taken seriously, as they may indicate suicidal thoughts.

Engaging in risky or self-destructive behavior: This can include substance abuse, reckless driving, or other actions that put the individual in harm’s way.

Recognizing these signs and knowing how to respond can make a significant difference in someone’s life. If you notice these signs in a loved one, it’s essential to reach out, offer support, and encourage them to seek professional help.

Stigma surrounding mental health issues often prevents people from discussing their struggles openly, which can lead to feelings of shame and isolation. One of the most powerful tools in suicide prevention is open, honest communication. By creating a safe space for individuals to express their feelings without judgment, we can help them feel less alone and more understood. It’s crucial to let those who are struggling know that it’s okay to ask for help and that there are people who care about them.

Encouraging open conversations about mental health not only supports those in crisis but also helps to educate the broader community about the importance of mental well-being. Through awareness campaigns, community events, and social media, we can promote messages of hope, resilience, and the importance of seeking help.

June is Men’s Health Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the unique health challenges that men face. At the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board (H-NNCSB), we are focusing on an often overlooked but critically important aspect of men’s health: mental health. In a society where men are frequently encouraged to be stoic and self-reliant, discussing mental health openly and seeking help can be daunting. This month, we want to break down these barriers and emphasize the importance of mental health while highlighting the services we offer to support the men in our community.

Mental health issues affect men and women differently, and men are often less likely to seek help. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), men are more likely to die by suicide, and many struggle with untreated depression and anxiety. Social stigma, cultural expectations, and a lack of awareness often prevent men from reaching out for the support they need.

Common Mental Health Challenges for Men

           1. Depression and Anxiety - Depression and anxiety are common mental health disorders that can significantly impact daily life. Symptoms might include persistent sadness, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and changes in sleep and appetite. Men might also exhibit anger or aggression as a manifestation of these conditions.

           2. Substance Use - Men are more likely to use substances such as alcohol and drugs to cope with stress and emotional pain, leading to substance use disorders. This can further exacerbate mental health issues and create a cycle of dependency.

           3. Stress and Trauma - Work-related stress, relationship issues, financial pressures, and past trauma can take a toll on mental health. Men might find it challenging to talk about these problems or seek help, leading to prolonged suffering.

As we mark the final day of Mental Health Awareness Month, we at the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board (HNNCSB) want to take a moment to reflect on the journey we've shared and the progress we've made together. This month has been a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health and the need for ongoing awareness, support, and advocacy.

Throughout May, we have dedicated ourselves to raising awareness about mental health issues, reducing stigma, and promoting resources available for those in need. From informative webinars and community workshops to social media campaigns and personal stories shared by brave individuals, we've seen a collective effort to bring mental health into the spotlight.

           Reflecting on Our Achievements

Educational Outreach: We've held numerous educational sessions, reaching hundreds of community members and providing essential information on recognizing mental health issues, seeking help, and supporting loved ones.

Community Engagement: Our community events, both virtual and in-person, have fostered a sense of unity and shared purpose. Activities like mental health fairs, walkathons, and art exhibits have not only raised awareness but also created safe spaces for conversations about mental health.

Resource Distribution: We've distributed pamphlets, resource guides, and emergency contact information to ensure that everyone in our community knows where to turn for help.

Support Groups and Counseling: Our support groups and counseling sessions have seen increased participation, indicating a growing recognition of the importance of mental health care. These services provide vital support and a sense of community for individuals facing mental health challenges.

           Moving Forward

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, we must remember that our work is far from over. The awareness raised this month must translate into sustained action. Here are some ways we can continue this momentum:

Continue the Conversation: Let's keep talking about mental health openly and without judgment. Conversations can break down stigma and encourage those in need to seek help.

Support Each Other: Be there for friends, family, and colleagues. Sometimes, a simple check-in can make a world of difference.

Seek Help: If you or someone you know is struggling, don't hesitate to seek professional help. Early intervention can lead to better outcomes.

Get Involved: Volunteer, donate, or participate in community events focused on mental health. Your involvement can make a significant impact.

           A Final Note of Gratitude

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has contributed to making this Mental Health Awareness Month a success. Your support, participation, and dedication have been invaluable. Together, we can continue to build a community where mental health is prioritized, understood, and supported.

In the golden years of life, our seniors deserve not only our respect and gratitude but also our unwavering support for their mental well-being. Yet, mental health issues among the elderly often go unnoticed or untreated, leading to unnecessary suffering and diminished quality of life. As we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month this May, let's shed light on the importance of mental health in our aging population and explore ways to provide them with the care and support they deserve.

Growing older comes with its own set of challenges, including physical ailments, loss of independence, and social isolation, all of which can take a toll on mental health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression affects about 7% of the elderly population worldwide, and anxiety disorders are also common among older adults. Moreover, factors such as stigma, lack of awareness, and barriers to accessing mental health services further compound the issue.

Why Mental Health Awareness Matters for Seniors

           1. Improved Quality of Life: Addressing mental health concerns can significantly enhance the overall well-being and enjoyment of life for seniors, enabling them to remain active and engaged in their communities.

           2. Enhanced Physical Health: Mental and physical health are closely intertwined. By addressing mental health issues, we can also improve seniors' physical health outcomes and reduce the risk of chronic illnesses.

           3. Preservation of Independence: Supporting seniors' mental health can help them maintain their independence and autonomy for longer, allowing them to age gracefully in their own homes and communities.

Ways to Support Elderly Mental Health

           1. Social Connection: Encourage socialization and meaningful connections with family, friends, and peers. Loneliness and isolation are major risk factors for depression and anxiety in seniors, so fostering social engagement is crucial.

           2. Active Lifestyle: Promote physical activity and regular exercise, which have been shown to have numerous mental health benefits, including stress reduction and mood improvement.

           3. Healthy Habits: Encourage healthy lifestyle choices, such as balanced nutrition, adequate sleep, and mindfulness practices. These habits can help seniors manage stress and maintain emotional well-being.

           4. Open Communication: Create a supportive environment where seniors feel comfortable discussing their feelings and concerns. Validate their experiences and offer empathetic listening without judgment.

The Importance of Mental Health Awareness in Youth

In the midst of bustling classrooms and lively playgrounds, there exists a silent struggle that often goes unnoticed: the mental health of our youth. As we navigate the complexities of modern life, it's crucial to shine a spotlight on this issue and equip ourselves with the tools to support the mental well-being of our younger generation. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and there's no better time to start the conversation and take action.

Adolescence is a pivotal time marked by significant physical, emotional, and social changes. It's a period of exploration, self-discovery, and growth, but it can also be accompanied by stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), approximately 1 in 5 youth aged 13–18 experiences a severe mental disorder at some point during their life. Yet, despite the prevalence of these issues, stigma and misconceptions often prevent young people from seeking help.

Promoting mental health awareness in youth is essential for several reasons:

           1. Early Intervention: Identifying mental health concerns early allows for timely intervention and support, potentially preventing the escalation of problems later in life.

           2. Academic Success: Mental health directly impacts academic performance, attendance, and overall school success. By addressing these issues proactively, we can create a conducive environment for learning.

           3. Long-Term Well-being: The habits and coping mechanisms developed during adolescence significantly influence future mental health outcomes. By fostering resilience and self-care practices early on, we can empower young people to navigate life's challenges more effectively.

Ways to Support Youth Mental Health

           1. Open Dialogue: Encourage open conversations about mental health at home, in schools, and within the community. Create a safe space where young people feel comfortable expressing their feelings and seeking support.

           2. Normalize Seeking Help: Challenge the stigma surrounding mental health by normalizing help-seeking behaviors. Let youth know that it's okay to ask for assistance when they're struggling and that support is readily available.

           3. Educate and Raise Awareness: Provide education and resources on mental health topics, including stress management, coping strategies, and the importance of self-care. Use age-appropriate materials and activities to engage young audiences.

           4. Foster Resilience: Teach resilience-building skills such as problem-solving, emotion regulation, and positive thinking. Encourage activities that promote self-confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of belonging.

           5. Access Community Resources: Utilize local resources and support services offered by organizations like the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board (H-NNCSB). H-NNCSB provides a range of mental health services tailored to youth and families, including counseling, crisis intervention, and psychiatric care.

Substance Use Prevention and Treatment: Education, prevention, and treatment services for youth struggling with substance use disorders.

By leveraging these resources and working together as a community, we can create a culture of mental health awareness and support that empowers our youth to thrive.

As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month, let's renew our commitment to supporting the mental well-being of our youth. By fostering open dialogue, normalizing help-seeking behaviors, and accessing community resources like those provided by the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people and create a brighter, healthier future for generations to come. Let's join hands and ensure that no young mind struggles alone.

May is not just any month; it's a time to reflect, raise awareness, and advocate for mental health. At Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board (CSB), we stand at the forefront of this crucial movement, committed to fostering a community where mental health is prioritized, understood, and supported.

           Embracing the Journey:

Mental health is not a destination but a journey—one that each of us navigates uniquely. At Hampton-Newport News CSB, we understand the complexities of this journey and offer a range of compassionate services tailored to individual needs. Whether it's counseling, therapy, medication management, or peer support, our dedicated team is here to walk alongside you every step of the way.

           Breaking the Stigma:

One of the biggest barriers to seeking help for mental health concerns is the stigma surrounding it. This stigma can lead to shame, silence, and isolation. However, at CSB, we believe in breaking down these barriers through education, advocacy, and open dialogue. By sharing stories, dispelling myths, and promoting acceptance, we strive to create a community where everyone feels safe and supported in seeking the help they deserve.

           Empowering Resilience:

Resilience is not about avoiding struggles but about facing them with strength and courage. Through our programs and services, we empower individuals to build resilience, develop coping skills, and reclaim their lives. Whether overcoming trauma, managing stress, or navigating life transitions, we provide the tools and support needed to thrive in the face of adversity.

           Fostering Connections:

Connection is at the heart of mental wellness. At CSB, we recognize the importance of community and strive to create spaces where individuals feel connected, valued, and understood. From support groups to community events, we facilitate opportunities for meaningful connections that nourish the soul and promote healing.

           Looking Ahead:

As Mental Health Awareness Month unfolds, let us come together as a community to shine a light on mental health, promote understanding, and offer support to those in need. Let us stand united in our commitment to nurturing minds and healing hearts, today and every day.

Allison was appointed Director of Nursing and Outpatient Mental Health Services in July 2022 after serving various roles at the Hampton Newport News Community Services Board during a career now almost 35 years.

She attended Riverside School of Nursing and is a Certified Psychiatric Nurse.

One of her distinguishing characteristics, along with a strong work ethic, is loyalty, a trait she acquired from her parents. Her father was an Army Pilot who bravely flew scores of dangerous missions during the Vietnam War. A retired, decorated Lt. Colonel, she considers her father a true hero and her mother no less of a hero. Allison's mom stepped up to raise her children, often on her own, as military wives must do, providing a strong, safe, disciplined and loving environment. Also a professional nurse, Allison's mom served as a role model for her career choice.

Allison feels she is a woman of strength, with a tenaciousness and drive tempered by a heart of kindness and compassion she brings to her profession daily. Allison believes she is fortunate to work on a strong team and understands she could do nothing without her teammates. Allison is more than all work and spends as much spare time as she can driving or cruising to sandy beaches. An even greater joy is spending time with her family, her two-year-old grandson Liam most of all.

Allison looks forward to many more years at the Community Services Board making a difference in the lives of the clients we serve as we strive to make Hampton and Newport News a premier provider of mental health services.

I sometimes wonder how I ended up with two exceptional mothers — both of whom have inspired me more than they will ever know.

town of McWilliams, Alabama, a town of fewer than 200 people. In fact, today, it is nearly a ghost town, with fewer than 30 people remaining. Although our town was very primitive and very poor, being raised by my grandmother, I never felt less than anyone else. She raised both me and my first cousin after her three children were grown. She instilled values in us like faith, honesty, discipline, trustworthiness, and respect for others, regardless of their background. She treated us equally and would not accept less than the best from either of us. My grandmother had the special gift of being strict while also being nurturing which meant that she could make us feel valued even when we were being disciplined.

Though she only had an eighth-grade education, I think of her as the most brilliant woman I have ever known, because she could navigate any environment with just the little that she had. In fact, her mantra was "Give until it hurts" — meaning that no matter how little or how much one has, giving should feel impactful; after all, if we don't feel the impact, have we truly "given" anything? With that, I grew up witnessing her take what little she had to help those who had even less. My grandmother's brilliant mind began to give way to Alzheimer’s in her late 70s, and she endured its ups and downs until she passed away in 2010 at 86 years old.

My grandmother raised me so that my mother could graduate college, which brings me to my second inspirational figure, my biological mother, Susan. Determined to leave the confines of rural Alabama, my mother left home and traveled to Marshall, Texas, where she studied Elementary Education and History at Wiley College. She was one of the first people in my family to obtain a college degree. I learned so much at a young age because of her. This foundation inspired me to always want to learn new things and to do my best.

Shortly after graduating, she got on a bus and went to Dallas— by herself. She began her professional career there, where she taught for over 30 years. As a teacher, my mother always chose to work with youth in underserved areas. She loved teaching and felt strongly that her place was in the classroom with the students.

She didn't drive and often joked that she spent most of her salary taking a taxi to get to and from work, but she would not have it any other way.

As fate would have it, my mother became ill during the pandemic, and she never recovered; she passed away in 2020 at the young age of 67. She spent her last year teaching virtually, which she absolutely abhorred. In one of my last conversations with her, she stated that she missed her "kids," and by that, I knew she meant her students. She was looking forward to getting back into the classroom, but that was not to be. It became abundantly clear after her passing just how impactful her teaching had been when my sister shared with me a few social media posts wherein former students talked about how my mom never gave up on them, or how they looked to her as a mother figure.

These two mothers inspire me because they were both very humble, yet very confident, and most of all, they cared for those in need. These are just a few of the great qualities they modeled that I have tried to carry with me along the way. I consider it the highest compliment to be told that I remind others of either of these great women. It gives me great joy to honor them.

Team of the Quarter - April - June 2023

With just a few weeks of preparation, a diverse team from different divisions collaborated to take on the GiveLocal 757 campaign for 2023, initially with no clear expectations other than making the HNNCSB present in the campaign. Despite the tight timeline, they accomplished a multitude of tasks, such as setting up campaign pages, creating a theme, assembling fundraising teams, coordinating with staff, producing videos, securing incentives, and learning the administrative aspects of GiveLocal, all of which typically took months for other organizations.

The team's ability to swiftly unite, establish a theme, allocate tasks, and execute them with speed and dedication exemplifies the power of people working together effectively. They aligned their efforts with the HNNCSB Strategic Plan, focusing on raising awareness and engagement within the community. They created videos that showcased their programs and services, reinforcing their commitment to the plan and delivering a consistent message. Additionally, they collected numerous prizes as incentives for donors, significantly contributing to the fundraising effort.

The team not only demonstrated their skills in planning and execution but also effectively utilized various communication channels, such as the HNNCSB website, email messages, and social media, to keep everyone informed and engaged throughout the campaign. Their collective effort resulted in an outstanding fundraising achievement, raising over $23,000 from approximately 200 donors in just a few weeks, the highest amount in the organization's five-year involvement with GiveLocal. These funds directly support the emergency needs of the people served by the HNNCSB.

In summary, this team's remarkable success in a limited timeframe highlights the principle that people working together as an effective team can accomplish far more than the same number of individuals working independently. Their dedication, cooperation, and determination significantly contributed to the campaign's success, benefiting both the organization and the community it serves.

Thank you to Sherea Ryan, Renee Davenport, Jae Hee Jackson, Antone Green, Jennifer Small and Catrina Jones for all of your hard work and contributions!

Q: Can you describe a challenging situation you faced this quarter and how you approached it to achieve a positive outcome? A: This past quarter I was faced with the challenge of insuring that everything I needed to get done was done. There were multiple grants, including but not limited to, Peer Recovery Specialist certification grants, Medicaid billing grants, and the Peer Academy which ended earlier this month…making sure that everything was in place to make sure the trainings were successful. There was so much happening at one time but I did what I knew to do and that was reaching out to my high power and seeking His guidance. I took one thing at a time and things got done. When I looked up, I received the Employee of the Quarter award. I didn’t even know it! I was busy working on the training and I saw all of the emails come and I was so thankful.

Q: What would you say is the best part about working here at CSB? A: One word – support. Especially being in this position because I started out as a Peer Recovery Specialist myself. When I moved into this position, I had to submit my vision. From then until now, from leadership to the peer staff and coworkers, everyone has been supportive in pushing that vision forward. That’s what I love most, the support that I receive.

Q: What are some ways you maintain a healthy work/life balance? A: I make a goal of taking care of myself by practicing self-care. As a person in long-term recovery, I’ve learned if I’m skilled in techniques to do that, my overall well-being is tended to. With this position has come a lot of responsibilities. When I make time for myself, prayer, meditation, music, or whatever I enjoy doing, that’s how I maintain the balance. Self-care is it!
